Nongshim's Latest Seafood Tangmyeon Detects Carcinogens in Europe

It is known that first-class carcinogen ethylene oxide was detected in seafood soup noodles exported to Europe by Nongshim. The European Union's Food Feed Rapid Alert (RASFF) system has taken measures to recover and recall Nongshim's 'Seafood Tangmyeon' in European countries.

According to the industry on the 12th, ethylene oxide, a carcinogen, was detected in Nongshim's 'seafood ramyun' sold in Germany. The amount of ethylene oxide that has been calibrated is known to exceed the EU standard of 0.05 ppm by more than 148 times. Accordingly, RASFF notified each European country on the 6th to immediately stop selling products produced on that date and to recall them.

The products subject to recall are all products with an expiration date of January 27, 2022 and 'Seafood Tangmyeon' products with an expiration date of March 3, 2022. Ethylene oxide is a chemical used for sterilization and disinfection, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) defines ethylene oxide as a first-class carcinogen.

Nongshim is investigating the inflow route of ethylene oxide. An official from Nongshim said, "We are determining the cause of the ethylene oxide and the product on that date," adding, "We judged that there was no problem with the products produced on other dates, and for this reason, they are distributed normally in Europe."

Regarding seafood soup noodles distributed in Korea, he added, "There is no problem because export and domestic use have different production lines."
